Amateur Restaurant Review: Bunsen Burgers

After moving to the new Rackspace office in Windcrest, we've been on a hunt for unique restaurants to try. I've always wanted to try Bunsen Burners because it has a creative web site, theme, and best of all - they have burgers.

I ordered the "Stehling Experiment", which consists of the following:

San Antonio’s first experimental bean burger.
A 1/3 pound juicy patty, layers of fritos, refried beans, and cheddar cheese, topped with house-made pico de gallo.

It was pretty spectacular. The black bean patty and refried beans had a ton of flavor. It was topped with shredded cheese that was melted along with frito chips (very nice touch). The crunch of the chips kept the beans together and prevented the burger from becoming mushy. Their pico de gallo was pretty simple, but it added some extra spice to the whole burger (which was already mildly spicy).

I ordered the regular "Sci-fi Fries" (you can optionally ask for sweet potato fries) and they appeared to have panko bread crumbs on them. It looked like they were tempura fried, and they had a unique taste. I could have eaten at least 2-3 servings of those easily.

The atmosphere was really surprising. They had a bunch of retro stuff all over, including turntables, lava lamps, old audio receivers, and movie props. There was even a cheesy sci-fi movie on the TV that looked like it belonged on a MST3K show. This is the art on the wall next to the table where we sat:

I'm not sure if I've ever seen such unique names for various types of burgers. When I go back again, I'll probably get "The Roswell".

All in all, I really liked the place. I've never liked rating places on a scale, so here's the pros and cons list:

Pros: excellent food, unique fries, friendly staff, funky atmosphere
Cons: pricey sides, gets a little crowded at lunch
